Hello, I'm John. Meet me showing traditional reed-boarding in my video. I've been established as a plasterer for 24 years. Plastering is what I do and I Iove it. From simple plaster board ceilings in new-builds and semis, to restoration work on Grade 1 & 2 Listed buildings. I resolutely believe in my trade, I'm 6ft 3inch tall & I LOVE CEILINGS!!!!

I'm friendly, reliable and a clean worker. I pride myself in the craft of plastering and render work.

The latest methods and materials are usually quicker; more cost-effective. I'm very happy to talk to you about which methods and materials are really the wiser for you and your job. Often time-served traditional approaches are still the right way,

I'm a keen amateur water-colour artist & sculptor in my spare-time, this seemingly unrelated skill is often needed in my work, and almost always in character properties. My advice and your quote will always be free.

How do I work? I was privileged to be trained by a craftsmen from a past generation. 'Fit as a fiddle' into his 90s, he had all the true skills. His name was Cyril, he was the very best of his trade - he could boast that he trained with his Grandfather at Pancreas Chambers. In Cyril's memory, I'm proud to be holding his skills. As I said, often it still stands - the age-old way, 'Cyril's Way' is the right way, please ask me more about the best way to do your work when we meet.

I like to do the best work, you'll benefit from my experience, so be it simple or complex, dare I say, as a point of honour, you'll always receive competitively priced, well crafted workmanship.

I'm not one to forget to respect your home and property, as your home, not just as another building site. I leave your job clean and tidy.

My usual work is in a 10 mile radius of Bushey. Where your work is more specialist I can travel. Small jobs are fine, so from a few hours work to a whole property, I take on jobs of any size.

I will give you a free quote and advice. I work weekends too. Most plastering questions I hope are answered at the foot of this page. - for more in-depth help, I am available 9am to 8pm. Ring me now.

Frequently Asked Questions on Plastering

Q, How do I Remove artex from my walls?
A, Artex can sometimes be removed by using a Wallpaper Steamer, or try scraping & soaking the Artex using a wet sponge or a used washing-up liquid bottle.

Q, What is the best plaster to use
A, British plasterers use Thistle Products, made by British Gypsum. There's a range of plasters from background to finishing. Sand and cement is sometimes used as a base coat. Older properties use Lime plaster. Usually a requirement in Listed Buildings.

Q, How long does it take to dry, before you can paint it,
A,Drying times vary according to the depth of plaster and to the weather conditions, On a hot summer's day for example, Skimmed plasterboard is sometimes ready to be painted the following day. Generally a week to 10 days should be ample time.

Q, What sort of undercoat should I use first to seal the plaster
A, Ideally plaster should never be painted, this is particularly true of lime -plaster where only lime-wash or distemper should be used. Thistle walls should have a light wash of PVA or wallpaper paste. Best of all, use 'sizing'.

Q, Why is my plaster not drying out properly
A, If you use a One coat Emulsion on bare plaster, any plaster will peel. All plaster will eventually dry out, unless more water is being added to it , as in the case of a leak!

Q, When mixing Plaster what is the best mix to use.
A, The correct ratio of water added to the Plaster gives a creamy, smooth Plaster, The amount varies according to the type of plaster.

Q, Can I reduce costs
A, Yes: take the old plaster off yourself. It's often 25% of the job. If its lime-plaster and your property is Listed, keep it for re-use.

Q. Can I reduce costs more
A, Yes: Get the materials to the job ready. Why pay me to stand around in a builders merchants or on the phone ordering materials
